What is this?

Executive Order 14155, called "Withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization", is an official order signed by President Trump on January 20, 2025. This order directs the U.S. government to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), an international organization that coordinates global health responses, disease surveillance, vaccine distribution, and emergency health assistance during pandemics and outbreaks. This marks the second time the United States has attempted to exit the WHO. The withdrawal reflects continuing political tensions over America's role in global health governance and concerns about the organization's effectiveness and transparency.

What's in it for us?

The most direct effects on young adults and teens would likely be through changes in global health programs and international health careers. Young people interested in public health, medicine, or international relations might see fewer opportunities for WHO internships, fellowships, or career paths that involve working with international health organizations. Students studying global health or participating in study abroad programs focused on international health work might find reduced funding or opportunities since the U.S. would no longer be contributing to or participating in WHO initiatives.

On the positive side, supporters argue that the money previously sent to the WHO could be redirected to domestic health programs that might directly benefit American young people, such as mental health services, drug addiction treatment, or health research. Some young adults might benefit from increased focus on American health priorities rather than global ones
