What is happening?
Israel launched a major air campaign against Iran on June 12, hitting nuclear facilities and killing most of Iran's top military commanders in what they're calling a preemptive strike to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons. The attacks targeted Iran's uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and other key nuclear sites, with Israel claiming they needed to act before Iran joined the nine countries that currently have nukes: the US, Russia, China, France, UK, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea. Israel had been threatening this kind of action for years rather than wait for Iran to potentially become the tenth nuclear power, though this massive escalation obviously has huge implications for the Middle East.
What could happen?
Iran now faces a critical choice after Israel's devastating strikes: either return to negotiations and give up their nuclear program or retaliate and risk massive U.S. intervention. If they choose retaliation, Iran could block the vital Straits of Hormuz shipping lane, attack Gulf energy infrastructure, or strike U.S. military targets through their regional militias. While Iran's ability to hit back at Israel is weakening, they still have enough firepower to cause serious regional chaos. However, any major retaliation would likely trigger overwhelming U.S. military response, and airstrikes alone probably can't eliminate Iran's nuclear knowledge since you can't bomb away what scientists already know in their heads.
President Trump is keeping everyone guessing, demanding Iran's "Unconditional surrender" one day, then telling reporters "I may do it. I may not do it. Nobody knows what I'm going to do." Most analysts think Iran will ultimately choose diplomacy over destruction, both because the regime wants to survive and because ordinary Iranians are exhausted by conflict. But there's also a chance Iran might gamble on outlasting Trump and Israel, potentially even leaving the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and rushing toward testing an actual nuclear weapon, which would be an extremely dangerous path that could force Trump's hand and plunge the entire Middle East into war.
