What is this?
Executive Order 14182, titled "Enforcing the Hyde Amendment", is an executive order signed by Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States, on January 24, 2025, that revokes two key orders from the previous Biden administration, specifically Executive Orders 14076 and 14079, which expanded access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion services, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. This new order reaffirms the Hyde Amendment's prohibition on using federal taxpayer dollars for elective abortions, reversing previous federal funding for abortion-related services and programs.
What is in it for us?
Young adults face significant challenges under Executive Order 14182, particularly those relying on federal healthcare programs. The Hyde Amendment denies abortion coverage to individuals enrolled in the federal Medicaid program and has been expanded to other programs as well, denying abortion coverage to a range of individuals who rely on federal programs, including military servicemembers, veterans, and federal employees. This directly impacts young adults in the military, federal jobs, or on Medicaid who may need reproductive healthcare services. For those aged 18-26 with limited financial resources, this creates barriers to accessing care and may force difficult financial decisions or require seeking services in other states.
From supporters' perspectives, this executive order benefits young adults with moral or religious objections to abortion by ensuring their tax dollars don't fund procedures they oppose. Young adults who view abortion as morally objectionable may appreciate that government spending aligns with their personal values. Some argue this could encourage greater focus on preventive reproductive healthcare, though this effect would be indirect.
